Marie:

Going on the Ghost Tour

JIMMY DISAPPEARED, AND Crystal and I looked at each other in surprise. “He’s getting really good at that, isn’t he?” Crystal said.

“He is,” I said. “I wonder if he went back to the hotel.”

“He wasn’t too keen on going back there,” Crystal said. “He’s probably at my place.”

“You think?” I asked.

“More than likely,” she said. “We’ll get him later. It’s almost time. I have to get ready.”

She lit several electronic candles, setting the mood, and then unlocked the door. Moments later, the bell chimed and the first of her clients walked in.

“We’re here for the tour,” a man in his sixties said, and then pointed at the woman standing next to him, like it was her fault he was there. “She wanted this. One of the things on her bucket list.”

Crystal smiled. “Did you bring your receipt?” she asked.

The woman nodded eagerly and dug a sheet of paper out of her purse and handed it to Crystal. Crystal opened it and glanced down at the names.

“Mr. and Mrs. Riding,” she said. “So happy to meet you. You’re the first here. Just have a look around the shop while we wait for the others.”

Mrs. Riding grinned and headed off for the overfull shelves, but Mr. Riding scowled and looked pointedly at his watch. “We got a show at ten,” he said. “We’re going to be done by that time. Right?”

“Absolutely,” Crystal replied. “You won’t miss your show.”

The bell jingled again, and Crystal turned to the next batch of tourists, welcoming them all like they were long-lost friends. Soon the shop had thirteen tourists, plus Crystal and me.

“Looks like we’re all here,” Crystal said. “If you’ll all follow me, we’ll head out back to the van, and the ghost tour can begin.”

“About time,” Mr. Riding said, but followed his wife obediently enough.

Soon we were all packed into the van, and Crystal pulled an old-fashioned hand mike from a holder by the steering wheel.

“Welcome to Crystal’s ghost tours,” she said. “I’m Crystal and I’ll be your tour guide for an evening of chills and thrills. Everybody buckled up? We don’t want to have an accident and have one of you end up on our tour, now do we?”

Tittered laughter all around, and a few seat belts clicked closed as Crystal backed the van from the parking spot and headed down the alleyway to the street.

“The first stop on our tour is the Oasis Motel,” she said. “Any of you heard of it?”

A few people put their hands up, and I could have joined them because it was one of the places I’d read about and decided I would never go because it looked like there was probably at least one ghost there. Maybe more.

“Why’d you pick this place?” I whispered.

“Because it’s creepy,” Crystal whispered, and smiled. “Besides, it was easy to talk the owner into letting us into that room. I just cut him in on the take.”

She stopped the van in the courtyard, and everyone disembarked, huddling in groups of three or four.
